The Deadline is Tomorrow!

WOW!!!!  I cannot BELIEVE how many have signed up for this next round of Housekeeping 101!  The deadline to sign up is tomorrow, so be sure to email me and get on the list for the session beginning on February 4th!

On January 26th, I will be sending out emails to all who have signed up so far.  I'll let you know the details of the course and what you'll be doing.  I'm really looking forward to starting up this session;  even though I've always enjoyed keeping house in general, this always sparks that renewed excitement and I end up curled up with all of my old housekeeping manuals every evening like that favorite novel you read over and over again...  Can't wait!

Housekeeping College Registration Form

As you may have noticed in the sidebar, Housekeeping 101 will be enrolling again!  The link for the form doesn't seem to be working, so please send me an email beginning in January if you are interested in signing up.  I will reply with all necessary details.

Of course, Housekeeping College has evolved over time.  It's now a four week course of basic information that is easier to condense.  There's no pop quiz, but there have been lots of fun emails to read in response to the lessons!  It's really informal, and definitely an optional thing; whether anyone actually does each lesson is something I'll never know.  But as more time passes, I get the itch to develop it more.  To bring it into more detail and perhaps print an actual booklet, or create a binder, for participants.  Maybe just put it on cd-rom?  Who knows!  But thanks for all of your enthusiasm for the homemaking arts!

I've really missed being home full time the last year, and now that the shop is settling in and I have more and more employees, my schedule will be changing for the better.  I'm going to be home more now than ever, and will be able to get back to polishing my silver and blogging with more regularity.  I'll never give up my little fabric and yarn shop (aren't sewing and knitting part of Home-Ec anyway?) but I'm finding that balance I have always worked hard to have.  Next on the agenda is redoing our daily routine that is mapped out here.  Maybe it will help the other housewives who also work outside of the home find their balance if they see how someone else is making it work?

Anyway, I've gone off on a tangent as ususal....  Get ready for the next round of HK101! Email me to sign up!

An Ailing Refrigerator Has It's Benefits...

P7090178

Our refrigerator died.  On the hottest day of the century.  Of course.  Thankfully we have an old 1950's Westinghouse model in the garage we use for extra gallons of milk, the odd soda, and other miscellaneous items.  (With four little kids, you tend to buy milk 6 gallons at a time!).  So what do you do when your frig goes out?  In this order:

1.  Curse KitchenAid.  (I can't stress enough at how miserable these appliances are... after 2 dishwashers, a microwave, a stove/oven, 2 coffee makers, a toaster, and now the frig, I am completely avoiding this brand as if it were the bubonic plague!)

2.  Call KitchenAid to schedule a repair visit.

3.  Curse KitchenAid while emptying said refrigerator.

4.  Clean it til it sparkles!!!!!

I know it's a pain to have to go through dealing with a dead refrigerator, but on the upside, it's a great opportunity to clean it out!  No condensation building up because it's still cool inside, no stuff in the way...  it's great!  Now I have the wonderfully clean appliance you see above!  Take note, those of you in Housekeeping 101 -- this is a valuable tidbit to file away for future reference!

Housekeeping College Info, Update and Kickoff

First and foremost, to all of you who have emailed me in the last couple of weeks:  I am so sorry I didn't respond!  Thanks to hotmail, there was a server issue and I wasn't getting my email properly delivered.  As it is, I'm trying to get them caught up and send out responses to all of you, and it's still hiccupping and not letting me reply to the messages in some cases.   Please be patient.

For those emails requesting more information because they couldn't download the registration form:  the link to the file is broken , and since I wasn't getting your emails, I couldn't fix it for you!  Ahhh... double edged sword, ain't it?

Anyway, school is now in session, and I will try to get your lessons emailed to you before midnight, I promise.  Wish me luck!  Otherwise, you'll have two in your inbox tomorrow!

HK 101 Certificates

Hi everyone!  No, I haven't forgotten about the certificates!  I am putting them together over the long weekend to mail out on Tuesday when the post office re-opens.  Once we get past the Labor Day holiday, I will be back to posting regularly again.  But since it's the end of summer and we all have been so busy, we're just taking a little break here in the Roman household.  We need to get in a few last fun memories before the seasons change once more!  I'll see you all back here shortly, I promise!

Laundry Chart

Since today's lesson in HK 101 pertains to laundry instructions and how-to's, I thought I would share the charts from the lesson with everyone, not just the students....

Lndryvz

Here is a handy laundry chart to share with you:  Download laundry_charts.doc  You can print this out and hang it up in your laundry room to use as a reference for care labels.  Those things can be so confusing!  For more great laundry tips, go to cleaning101.com and browse their site.  Lots of good stuff there...

Housekeeping 101 Lesson 1

Hi everyone!  I have a little announcement for those of you enrolled in HK 101.  I have emailed both the class supply list and the first lesson to all participants, but those of you with Yahoo! email addresses have not yet received them.  I got an email from them saying that mail delivery was delayed, and not to resend the messages as they would go through...  I am not at all OK with this, as I want you to get what you signed up for!  If ;you still haven't received them by this afternoon, email me and let me know so that I can get them to you in another way.  Thanks so much!!!!  And Happy Dusting!

Birthdays

I've gotten a few questions regarding the enrollment form for HK101 and the birthday inquiry.  Here's why I ask for your birthdate (month and day only, as not to offend!).  I like to send out birthday cards to those whose birthday occurs during a session of Housekeeping College!  Sorry, the cat's out of the bag.  It was supposed to be a nice surprise in your mailbox, but now you'll all be watching for it, if your birthday is coming up during a session!  We only had one birthday during the last session, but this time it looks like there will be more...  hmmm, guess I better get over to Hallmark!  :)

I am receiving registrations left and right.  I am in the process of switching everything over to a new computer, so I haven't sent any confirmation emails yet.  On July 29th I will be sending out emails confirming all registrations and including the class supply list for you.  Don't worry!  No need to buy hundreds of dollars of stuff!  I promise!  It's stuff you already have around the house most likely, and will just help you in using it is all....

Bear with me during this technical transfer of files, and hopefully we'll head into this next session with no glitches!  It might mean I don't  get to the administrative stuff as quickly as I would like, but I guarantee I will complete everything!  I promise!

Registration will be through July 28th, and HK101 will begin on Monday, July 31st.  Please fill out the form and email it to me so that I can send you all the information and make sure to add you to the class list.

For more information on the Housekeeping 101 course, please see here.  You can always drop me a line if you have any questions as well.  HK 201 is still on hold, but may be able to start on the 31st as well...

"Household Management"

OK, some administrative-managerial-secretarial-whatever-you-want-to-call-them items are on deck this morning.

First of all, I did email the partner list for the dishtowel swap last night as promised.  Those of you who sent me emails saying you wanted to participate but didn't give me addresses were left off the list as I had no way for people to send you a package! Sorry!  But if we do another swap in the future, please sign up again...  the more the merrier!  We just need to know how to send you your swap package!  Those of you who did send all the info, I hope you are happy with your matchup.  This should be fun!  Let me know if I missed anything, or made any errors in the email...

Next, Housekeeping College will be starting up again.  On the 15th, I will post the registration link for HK 101.  I am not sure yet if there will be a HK 201 -- some bugs I need to work out.  Hopefully I will get them fixed in time to open up registration, but please don't count on it!  I promise you though, I am working hard on it...

And finally, many "Club House" issues have been mailed to subscribers!  Wow!  I am still amazed that anyone wanted to do this!  I hope you are all receiving them and that they are arriving in good condition.  ( I always worry about the postal system and things getting damaged...)  I'm already working on the  next one to be published around October 1st.  The tentative theme is "entertaining" or "being the perfect hostess".  I won't give away too many details, but this package will be bulging!  Lots of goodies, project instructions, and more....

OK, off to manage my own household now.  Hope you all have a wonderful day!

A Beautiful Gift and an Explosion...

Magnetic_board

This GORGEOUS magnetic board came from Stacie, a lovely girl who took part in our first Housekeeping College session.  She and her husband have a woodworking business making items such as this and memo boards, ribbon boards, custom frames, chalk boards, and lots of other items.  She left it unfinished so that I could paint/stain it or even cover it in fabric to match my own decor.  It is truly beautiful!  I absolutely love it Stacie, and you really didn't have to send me anything.  (But I am SO glad you did!)  And just look at the handmade card she enclosed; is there no end to your talents?!  Thank you so much!!!!

Card

As for the "explosion" part of this post, well, the KABOOM stuff arrived today as was promised.  Here is what the products look like that they want me to test:

Kaboom

I shall give you all my review and thoughts in a post here very soon...  Since today was the day to clean the bathrooms, I already had that done by the time the FedEx guy rang the bell.  When that task rolls around again in my schedule, I'll give them a try and then let you all know how it worked...

The Linen Closet Corner of My Home

The linen closet is on our second floor between the girls' bedrooms.  It's a nice spot because all of the bedrooms are up there as well as all the bathrooms with showers/tubs.  I can keep the hand towels for the bathroom on the first floor in the cabinet down there, so it's no big deal.  I'm not posting these photos to show off or anything (although I am a little bit proud of my ability to organize while on maternity leave with my first kid! I felt so busy, and now I wonder how I wasn't bored stiff!) but I'm posting them to go along with the next lesson for Housekeeping 101.   Here is a photo of my linen closet (there are empty spots on the shelf because at the time I was doing laundry and needed to iron the sheets before putting them back):

Linen_closet

Here is a close up of one of the labels I installed.  I purchased them from MarthaStewart.com back in spring 2002.  I think I have two extra sets around here somewhere.  If I can find them, I might be persuaded to part with them!  They have been a huge help in keeping me organized, and I recommend some type of labelling system for your own linen closet.

Shelf_labels

I have also designated a couple things just for guests.  One is a spot on the top shelf just for guest towels.  They are put together in sets and a ribbon is tied around each set so a guest can just grab a set and go without having to search for towels or washcloths on their own.  I also have a first aid kit and a guest toiletries kit labelled on the shelf below them.  That way we can always find the necessary items for boo-boos, and if a guest forgot their toothbrush or deodorant or razor, we have one for them.  We keep these very clearly labelled, and on a high shelf away from the kids.  We also keep Attie's asthma medication refills here since it is dark, cool, and a good central location.

Guests

If you, like me, like to use proper table linens such as placemats and cloth napkins, I have a good solution for storing them.  I keep the zip-up plastic pillowcase and curtain panel packages from past purchases.  An entire set of napkins will nicely fit inside one.  I have ironed all of the linens, and then simply folded the placemats in half within a group of the same style each, and laid them in the basket shown.  Then I placed the napkins in the plastic cases and set them on top.  All I have to do is grab a package of napkins and a set of placemats to set the table.  This keeps them organized and easy to use.  The stack next to them are a supply of dishtowels I've picked up on sale and keep on hand to replace the ones that wear out in the kitchen and get tossed in the rag pile.

Napkin_basket

Finally, don't forget to utilize the floor of your linen closet.  We buy our toilet paper in bulk packages, and I hate the plastic wrapping they come in.  So, I pull it all out of the package and store it in a basket here on the floor.  I can just grab a couple rolls on my way by the closet and place them in whichever bathroom needs to be refilled.  Ialso keep my extra boxes of tissues here as well as my unopened bottles of ironing water.  When the ironing water I am currently using is gone, I just grab a bottle from here.  I buy it several bottles at a time since I order it online.  I have very little storage space in my laundry room, so I don't want to clutter it up when I can just as easily store the extra here.  The clear bin holds one of my Great Grandmother's quilts that she made.  I placed it in here for now because it has a small tear to mend, and I want the rest of it protected until I can fix it.  Otherwise, there would be less on the floor here!

Bottom_storage

I hope this helps give you some ideas for your linen closet organization.  I welcome any suggestions you may have for mine as well.  Mine is a work in progress, but I think it has a good start.  I get a lot of emails asking me how I manage to maintain my home and my housekeeping schedules/routines with four small kids running around.  This might help back up my answer:  I try to stay organized and ahead of the game so I don't get swallowed up by it all!  I have been diagnosed with mild Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and although I don't  wash my hands 10,000 times per day, I do need to have things in their place or I literally consume myself thinking about it.  If my house isn't clean, I get anxiety attacks.  So please don't think I'm actually Bree from Desperate Housewives!  I've just found a way to maintain the order in my home to keep myself from going crazy, and found systems that allow me to stick to my routine in order to have things at a standard that makes me satisfied and gives me lots of time to spend with my family instead of scrubbing imaginary spots off the walls!

I probably gave too much information in this post that you all didn't want to read, but I guess you had to find out eventually!  I'm not Martha Stewart after all...  but then again, I don't have a prison record either!!!  Yay!!!!!

Housekeeping 101

Today's lesson is on ironing, and it's waiting in your inbox!  As a tip to everyone, however, please check out the link to the right in the shopping list for the site Salts for the Soul.  They have the best ironing/linen waters I have ever been able to find.  The scents are seemingly limitless, and they are completely natural too.  And they are safe for your iron, as they don't leave mineral deposits in the reservoir.  My favorite scents are Lavender-Gardenia, Lilac, and Peony.  Check them out.

My Husband Has Gone Crazy...

My husband, dear housewives, has gone crazy.  Stark raving mad.  Off the deep end.  And I am paying for it dearly.  I am seeking advice from anyone who has lived through, witnessed, or even heard of this particular phenomenon happening in my home, and that is:  my husband has decided he wants to rearrange all of our furniture!!!!  WHAT?!?!?!?  I never knew he even cared, let alone wanted to pick up a chair and carry it somewhere!  Now, I confess, when I was single and had my own charming, CLEAN, and orderly home, I rearranged furniture constantly.  It was great fun!  But in the five years (by the way, we closed on the sale of this house 5 years ago today and were hauling in boxes while getting ready for our wedding rehearsal dinner!) we have lived here, I haven't moved a stick of furniture since it was set in it's final resting place.  Yes it was time to do a little refresher move-around...  but to have him initiate it?  I went up to bed the other night, rather late I might add as I had been posting for the next day's lesson, and couldn't get into my bed.  He was up there re-decorating and the room was torn apart!  I didn't get in bed until almost 3 am, and not by choice or even rational reason.

Is this normal behavior for a man?  And what on earth do I do to survive this new phase?  I'm so afraid I'll wake up one morning and the bed will be in the kitchen and the family room furniture will be in the master bath!  Help me!!!!

Also, lesson 4 is in your email inboxes waiting for you...  Have a lovely day my dear housekeepers!

Spring Cleaning With Herbs

Housekeeping_1

Here are some natural cleaning recipes, courtesy of Frontier Co-op.

Lavender Carpet Freshener

Imagine yourself in a field of lavender flowers as you wpread this blend on your carpet.  It will absorb odors and dirt and impart a lovely scent as you vacuum it up.

3/4 cup baking soda

1/4 cup cornstarch

1/4 cup lavender flowers

Mix all ingredients in a bowl.  Sprinkle over carpet and let sit overnight.  Vacuum it up in the morning.

Cinderella Cleaner

Use this all-purpose cleaner on washable walls, courntertops -- you name it!  The herbs contribute both scent and antiseptic properties.

1 cup liquid castile soap

6 cups water

1/4 cup lemon juice

1/4 cup eucalyptus leaf or thyme leaf tea, strained

Swish all ingredients together in a a cleaning bucket, and use with soft, colorful cotton rags!

By the way, girls, today's HK 101 lesson is in your email inbox now... go get it and get busy!

Housekeeping 101 Is Now Enrolling

Class_name

For those of you who are interested in joining the Housekeeping College, please read on!  I have decided to make this a "6-week course" and have a daily lesson for each of you.  You don't have to write a research paper or send me a completed pot holder or anything like that!  No, rather on each day of the week, excluding weekends, I will put a new 'educational' post on the site.  At the end of the 6 weeks, who ever answers at least 15 of 25 questions on a "pop quiz" correctly, will get a diploma and an official housekeepers packet!  (I'm not telling what's in it--you have to complete the course to find out, but I promise it will be worth it!)

At the end of 6 weeks, I will start up another session called Housekeeping 201 to continue the college.  Anyone who wishes to enroll for the first time will be able to take the Housekeeping 101 course as I will repeat it concurrently.

Here's the administrative fine print to note:  Registration must be completed by April 25th.  Class begins on May 1st!  To register, simply complete and return this formto me:  Download housekeeping_college.doc

On April 28th, I will send to all participants a list of supplies for the class.  Don't worry, you won't be required to purchase a Dyson or a stand mixer!  No, simply things like a notebook that will be specifically for this purpose and things like that.  Items you may not even have to purchase, they may already be in your possession!

This will be fun, and I'm excited to see how many sign up!  If anything, the packet at the end will be worth it!
